Wooden Comedian’s Bid to Party in the Park
13 May 2009A large wood carving of the well known comedian Lenny Henry, created by St John’s Shopping Centre during their Red Nose Day fundraising events, has been donated to local charity PKAVS to showcase at this weekend’s PKAVS Party in the Park. The charity will auction the one-off carving at its 2009 Charity Ball in the autumn. The carving, by world championship chainsaw carver Peter Bowsher, will be the third carving to be sold at auction in the UK. To date, Peter’s carvings have raised over £1300 for UK charities and PKAVS were delighted to receive the donation which is a one of a kind. Siobhan McConnell, St John’s Shopping Centre manager said “Lenny Henry was bemused when he heard that St John’s Shopping Centre were going to carve out a place in history for him with just a chainsaw. Pete has created another unique and fabulous piece and it will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to any garden. ” Helen MacKinnon, marketing and development co-ordinator for PKAVS, said “This is such a unique gift and I’m delighted to accept it on behalf of PKAVS. We have high hopes that people bid high on the day to raise money for such a good cause.” The carving is available for viewing in St John’s Shopping Centre this week, situated in the unit next to True Scots in the South Street mall. Chainsaw Pete’s carvings of Oor Wullie raised almost £700 in Radio Tay’s Cash for Kids Auction in 2008, and Wall:E raised £600 for Make a Wish in 2009.
