Hell’s Kitchen Perth? Take your Child to Work will Never be the Same
30 April 2010On Thursday 29th April, one lucky Perthshire school boy, Calum Pretious (12), will be taking part in a work experience day to remember. Local pastry chef Graeme Maxwell, who trained under celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, notorious for his attention to detail and his demanding attitude, will be showing Calum the ropes of the catering business. The day will culminate in a very special delivery to one of his customers where Calum will be given the unusual opportunity to sell the fruits of his day’s labour to members of staff at Coffee Republic and St John’s Shopping Centre.
Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® program goes beyond the average “shadow” an adult. Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives do during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success.
Calum will follow a pre-planned agenda that will take him through the full commercial catering experience including ordering, prepping, making, delivering and selling the food. Graeme’s specialty is dessert making and, since moving to Perthshire last year, has established himself as a key player in the commercial desserts market supplying key foodie destinations such as Brig Farm Shop, Coffee Republic and the Orchid Café at McEwans of Perth.
St John’s Shopping Centre manager, Siobhan McConnell, was delighted to open the doors of the shopping centre to Calum’s enterprising project, “This is a tremendous opportunity for kids to really experience how vibrant and fun a working environment can be and to get a real snapshot of an industry from start to finish.”
Graeme commented “I am really looking forward to having my own apprentice chef for the day. Calum’s training will undoubtedly start with those two very special words: Yes Chef!”
