Late Night Shopping in St John’s Shopping Centre Bucks National Decline
26 June 2008St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth has announced positive first month results, which shows them bucking a national trend of declining footfall in UK shopping centres, following their introduction of Thursday late night shopping which started in Perth, in May. The increased opening times has proved a hit with local shoppers, showing an average uplift in footfall of 3.2% on last year’s figures, with Thursdays showing the highest increase of as much as 12%. The news comes, following a recent report from the Office of National Statistics that retail sales rose across the UK by 3.5% during May, the strongest monthly growth seen since January 1986. Siobhan McConnell, centre manager, commented, “There is no doubt that the UK retailing sector is facing one of its toughest times in recent years. However, by continually adapting our service to suit the changing needs of our market we’ve proven that we can not only reverse the decline but continue to grow and prosper. Strong consumer activity is essential to the stability of the UK economy and our success demonstrates that even small changes can make a very positive impact indeed.” Colin Grassick, Chair of Perth City Centre Action Group, added “Perth has a vibrant and attractive shopping offering with a vision for a prosperous future. We need to continue to build on these successes and view them as indicative that positive change is possible, even in a challenging economic climate.” For further information about St John’s Shopping Centre please log on to www.stjshopping.co.uk -- ENDS --
