Young Snapper Wins Photography Competition
Young Snapper Wins Photography Competition 06 August 2008
Crieff High School pupil, Jack Ward (16) has snapped up the top prize in St John’s Shopping Centre’s Pop into Perth photography competition, netting himself a top of the range digital camera worth £200. The competition, which ran in St John’s Shopping Centre during June, called on young photographers across Perthshire to submit their favourite city centre spot alongside an older photograph of the same view, demonstrating the contrast between historical and modern Perth. Jack Ward submitted two shots of Perth High Street, looking up towards St Paul’s Cathedral from the edge of the current pedestrianised area. One shot depicts the current view, the second shot depicts Perth High Street from the early 1940s. Jack , who is currently awaiting his higher results, is hoping to pursue a career in photography and graphic design and was delighted to receive the news that he had won the Pop into Perth competition. “I really can’t believe I’ve won! I’d heard about the competition from a teacher at school and popped into Perth to pick up an entry form and take my winning entry. It’s really great to see it was worth while entering” he said. Jack commented on his choice of scene, “I chose the view for a number of reasons. I was taken by the fact that there were still a lot of structural similarities between the 1940s and today. But what I thought was most interesting was that the same site was still a place for the people of Perth to gather. Both pictures show lots of people in groups, talking, and I thought that made it interesting. The shops have changed, their uses have changed but yet people still come together in the same place.” Siobhan McConnell, St John’s Shopping Centre manager, commented on Jack’s entry, “Jack has clearly captured Perth and its community at two very distinct periods in time. We liked the way his modern photo showed the different cultures and ethnic backgrounds of Perth, and that people were also a key component of both photographs. His entry was a clear winner.” For further information about activities in St John’s Shopping Centre and their competitions please log on to www.stjshopping.co.uk -- ENDS --
