With families tightening their belts because of the “credit crunch” and unemployment hitting its highest point in several years, Perth’s local shopping centre is bucking the national trend. A sudden influx of new stores on top of the normal recruitment requirements for the Christmas retailing period has generated more than 50 new jobs in St John’s Shopping Centre, Perth. The requirement for so many new staff has prompted centre management to stage a dedicated recruitment weekend on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th October to help retailers with their recruitment needs. Siobhan McConnell, St John’s Shopping Centre Manager commented, “Recruitment needs at this time of year always increases but this year is unprecedented. The recent opening of Coffee Republic and Calendar Club, which will be followed this weekend by the new Poundland store opening has created many new jobs in Perth at a time where people are already feeling the pinch and are actively looking for a second income.” “With so many new jobs available, we felt that it was essential to support our retailers in helping recruit so we will have a dedicated stand in the shopping centre this weekend to help job seekers in compiling their CVs and submitting applications to multiple stores. We are also working with Perth Job Centre to ensure the message about these retail opportunities gets out to as many people as possible.” she concluded.
