Homecoming Scottish Cup Tour Rolls into Perth
Homecoming Scottish Cup Tour Rolls into Perth 07 January 2009
As 32 teams battle it out in the fourth round of the Homecoming Scottish Cup this weekend, supporters will get the chance to experience the glory of the tournament when the oldest footballing trophy in the world makes a visit to St John’s Shopping Centre in Perth on Monday 12 January 2009. The Homecoming Scottish Cup Tour has been designed to engage with Scotland’s local communities and spread the message about joining in the celebrations for Homecoming Scotland 2009, a programme comprising over 300 events to celebrate Scotland’s culture, heritage and its people. As part of the football celebrations, local people in Perth will be encouraged to get behind their local team, St Johnstone, which play at home to Rangers the day after the trophy visit, Tuesday 13 January 2009. The Saints, who have never reached a Scottish Cup final in their history, are looking for locals to share their passion and excitement for the game ahead. Scotland’s passion for football is legendary and the Homecoming Scottish Cup, the oldest national trophy in the world which was originally minted in 1885, marks the role of the sport in our country’s culture and heritage. In a year that Scotland is being celebrated globally, the Homecoming Scottish Cup gives football supporters a chance to take pride in both their community and country, by joining in with fans all over the world in cheering on their home team. With more than 100,000 additional visitors expected to visit Scotland this year to celebrate Homecoming Scotland, which marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national bard Robert Burns, the whole country is being encouraged to play their part in their celebrations. By encouraging friends and family living overseas to visit Scotland and by dropping in on any of the 300-plus events, festivals and attractions that have been organised throughout the year, people in Perthshire will be able to celebrate their own ‘Scottish-ness’ and love of Scotland.
